Thackray House

Set within its own gardens and woodlands on the banks of the River Teith, Thackray House is the perfect base from which to explore the stunning surrounding countryside. Dating back to 1625, the building is filled with original period features. Individually designed en suite rooms include an LCD satellite TV, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes and a hairdryer. Some rooms also feature spa baths and lounges areas. The Roman Camp serves a full cooked breakfast daily. The restaurant has been awarded 3 AA Rosettes and serves modern cuisine featuring locally sourced shellfish and meat. Lunch and dinner are served in the charming dining rooms with scenic garden views. Guests can enjoy afternoon tea in the oak-panelled library and drawing room and the property also has a secret chapel. If you are looking for some activity there is so much to do on the doorstep, be that walking, hill climbing, canoeing, horse riding, cycling, fishing or playing golf. The picturesque local golf course at Callander is a short walk away from the hotel and horse-riding stables a mere ten minute drive. Fishing can be organised on our own stretch of the River Teith or on other local rivers. Glasgow and Edinburgh are around 1 hour’s drive away. A wee slice of heaven in the Trossachs

Pros: Everything - the Roman Camp is quite simply our favourite hotel in Scotland. The setting, furnishings, staff, food, everything - are impeccable!

Cons: Having to leave! The hotel has just been sold and we are hoping that the new owners maintain the look and feel of the place - it is truly unique and it’s impossible not to relax the moment you get there!

Pros: We were there for a couple days to attend a wedding. Beautiful ornate historic building: the gardens, drawing room and library are really something else. Standard rooms are spacious, mostly in good taste, the bed is comfortable, overall quiet.

Cons: Nothing was terrible, but the quality doesn't feel like it fully matches the price; it feels a bit like it's living on its past glory. Things were not very clean - lots of lint on the carpet, dust on the tea set, the skylight in the bathroom was half covered in grime. Parts of the room furniture and the bathroom felt dated (as in, remade in the 80/90s and aged poorly, rather than feeling luxe and chic like the rest of the hotel). The bistro food was very forgettable.

A relaxing and romantic break away in a gorgeous location.

Pros: Beautiful building and gardens. Perfect location for exploring Callander and the surrounding area. Rooms were large and furnished in keeping with the style and age of the building. Bed was extremely comfortable and jacuzzi bath was an added touch of luxury. Potting Shed Bistro was a perfect spot for a romantic, yet relaxed dinner and food was fantastic.

Cons: Nothing.

Pros: A fascinating hotel steeped in history. The team was welcoming and professional. The downstairs lounges were beautiful and luxurious with open fires. The suite was pretty special. Gorgeous setting and gardens next to the river. Breakfast was great and service excellent.
